Safety at home

You don't need to renovate. A handful of targeted changes remove most of the risk.

Bathroom

  • Grab bars by the toilet and in the shower
  • Non-slip mat and a shower chair
  • A raised toilet seat if standing is hard

Floors and stairs

  • Remove or tape down loose rugs
  • Clear cords and clutter from walking paths
  • Handrails on both sides of stairs; a light at top and bottom

Lighting and reach

  • Night lights on the path to the bathroom
  • Move daily items to waist height
  • A reachable phone in the bedroom and living area
